We’re giving away two free passes to Web Design Day

**UPDATE: Congrats to James Matchett and Michael Estok, our Web Design Day conference pass winners. Thanks to everyone who entered.

We have two free conference passes to Web Design Day—the annual web design and development conference in Pittsburgh, held this year on October 26—and we’re giving them away! Speaking this year are: Dan Mall, Brad Frost, Kevin Hoffman, Meagan Fisher, Jessica Ivins, and Geoff Barnes (with more speakers coming). How do you get your paws on the tickets?

THE RULES
Give us two good paragraphs in the comments down below about why you want to come to Web Design Day. Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit our beautiful city. Maybe you’ve always wanted to eat a Primanti Brothers sandwich. Maybe you have a crush on the dreamy Brad Frost. Who knows? One winner will be chosen as our favorite, and one winner will be chosen randomly from among the legitimate entries. Please don’t enter if you can’t realistically make it to Pittsburgh on October 26, because you’re responsible for your own travel arrangements. Make sure to leave us your email address so we know how to get in touch with you in case you win. Contest ends this coming Tuesday, September 18 at 2pm EDT. We’ll announce the winners shortly thereafter.

Our eternal thanks to power couple Jason and Val Head for donating the passes, and for continuing to support the Pittsburgh web community with events like Web Design Day and Refresh Pittsburgh.

We’ll see you there!

Here are some comments

  1. Because I will show up in a full Beetlejuice outfit in honor of Halloween?

But seriously, I would love to go. I am a young UX designer in the thriving digital community of Minneapolis, MN always looking for opportunities like this one. Also, I have a huge mancrush on Brad Frost.

  2. Because I’ve had a beer with Brad Frost, made fireworks in a JavaScript class hosted by Val Head and Sebly, and I’ve groaned through Jason’s jokes at Refresh Pittsburgh, but I’ve never been to a Web Design Day.

In fact, I didn’t even KNOW about Web Design Day until this year. There are too many people I have to meet.

  3. Oh to go to Pittsburgh and learn more about design.

I have been wanting to attend since this conference started, but it’s always fallen a day that I can’t make the trip. This year, however marks a time when I can actually be in attendance. And even if I don’t win, I’ll most likely be there.

However, to play on your sympathy, I’ll relate this my a tale of woe and lack of luck in winning tickets. The first, last and only time I won tickets was to Husker Du in 1987, but when I got to the club (no small feet of travel) it tuned out I wasn’t old enough to get in. I’m plenty old now and I’d love to expunge the bitter association that free tickets to a great event bring to mind.

Ps. Who told you about my crush?

  4. Because I would love to come and nerd-out with some fellow web designers then wake up to drive back for this little event I’m working at the next day http://downingtownmainstreet.com/dash/ This site is responsive and conference has Brad Frost there. That’s pretty meta.

I’m also a huge fan of United Pixel Workers and Full Stop! So, my coming to the conference means I’m most likely going to drive out with my best friend (Sean Graham). Hopefully that’ll sway Jay’s vote.

  5. Because I need to get learned some awesome lessons so that I can do my part to push the web forward – the right way. Also, I have thousand great reasons to get back to the Burgh, but a free reason would be the best.

  6. Because the last time I was in Philly (well, the only time) it was so sweltering hot I didn’t get to enjoy the city like I wanted.

My design/coding skills have stagnated and I need to get up to speed on the current state of web development – this looks like a good way to get a kickstart!

  7. Because Val Head herself inspired me to get into coding with Processing, and I gotta suck up to her as much as possible and continue my quest for knowledge!

  8. It’s the perfect opportunity to come back to western PA, visit family, network with awesome Pittsburghers, learn lots of useful stuff.

The Mr. Rogers display at the airport is calling my name….

  9. Ooh, ooh, pick me! I want to go to Web Design Day so badly so I can get away from the corporate monotony for one day and be surrounded by passionate people who love what they do. I love every opportunity to hang out with the web community in Pittsburgh.

I’m currently working as a primarily print designer, but have taught myself front end development and am so excited about what the web can offer in personal and someday professional fulfillment. I’d love to have the opportunity to expand my knowledge from professionals in the field and get to know more web folks in Pittsburgh! This sounds like a great conference!

  10. Two reasons, personal and learning.

Learning, I’m new to the industry of web and mobile design. I graduated in June of 2011 and went from an industrial design background and immediately got a job as a UX/Visual designer and have loved the industry every since. I want to further my skills and knowledge about web design as mostly I deal with mobile app design in my job. It would be an excellent networking opportunity especially in the Burgh which is close to home (from eastern Ohio).

Personal, my fiance has a lot of family in the area and that would give her an opportunity to go see them while I’m at the event and eventually we’re planning to get married in Pittsburgh.

Also Yuengling (personal favorite cheap beer) is dirt cheap there and before they brought it to Ohio I use to transport about 4-5 30 racks of bottle back to college (University of Cincinnati) whenever we visited her family.

  11. Two paragraphs? What is this – essay school?

    Kidding!

I’m Aaron Grando. I’m the Tech Lead at my awesome agency in Philadelphia, Red Tettemer + Partners. I’m the founder and designer for my very own (little!) apparel company, What Say Co.. I’ve got side-projects coming out of my ears, and I don’t get out of Philly very much. I’d really love to.

If I took the trip, it’d not be my first conference, it’d also be my first visit to Pittsburgh generally. As a native Philadelphian, the Pittsburgh hate has been ingrained quite deeply, but I’m willing to set that aside and bring myself into PGH with a wide-open mind. I’m also willing to set aside the following: my vegetarianism for a sandwich, my pride for a beer with the Full Stop crew, my purity for…

    Kidding! Again!

Nah, but really. If I got the tickets, I’d hang. I’d have a good time. That’s that.

  12. I’m getting married on October 14th and I’ll just be back from my honeymoon a few days before Web Design Day in Pittsburgh. We all know how hard it is to get back to work after taking time off so what better way to ease back in then taking a trip to Pittsburgh to brush up on some web chops!

Double bonus that my soon-to-be wife is from about an hour outside of Pittsburgh so we could make it a visit-all-the-family-that-couldn’t-make-the-wedding trip in addition to me learning and meeting many awesome things and people.

Plus I could share stories with Meagan about how Florida is the hell-hole of the country. No offense to anyone…I live there now and probably will for quite some time but all the crazy stuff happens in Florida.

  13. I should be chosen to go to Web Design Day because I am ignorant as to who Brad Frost is and must be introduced to his awesomeness. Educate me, Pittsburgh! I would also like to have the opportunity to get out of my Columbus design bubble and get out to see what the good designers of Pittsburgh are up to, as I see a plethora of great work coming from your fair city.

Send me to Web Design Day and I’ll return home to show these Columbus folks how design is done, PA style. Plus I’m wearing a UP shirt right now.

  14. Pittsburgh is my home. I started my career here 15 years ago as a software developer, and I’ve seen the increasing importance of design in my craft. A recent job move has brought design and user experience to the fore, and I’m working at the intersection of technology, health care, and usability. The impact of design in my job has never had more potential.

I would love to attend the Pittsburgh Web Design Day to rub elbows with those who are like-minded. Along with the technical benefits, I’m anticipating being energized by the passion of such designers. It would be a great opportunity to get out of my bubble and be inspired and spurred on.

  15. I would love to go because I am always trying to learn as much as possible to become the best designer that I can be. I do this so I can not just make a difference in my bottom line but for my clients and future clients. That I can serve them with the best knowledge possible, once we become stagnant we arre no longer movers and shakers for the people that matter to us the most our clients. I want to go for them.

Secondly, I’ve always been past Pittsburg and have always wanted to visit, I love the Pens, I love United Pixelworkers and I love french fries on my sandwiches and salads! I’m fairly new to the web game and I want to up the ante of my design arsenal!
